Nerve conduction studies
What is a Nerve Conduction Study?

A nerve conduction study (NCS) is a simple, safe and non-invasive test that measures how well your nerves are working.
During the test, small electrical pulses are applied to the skin over a nerve, and responses are recorded to check how quickly and effectively signals travel. This helps to identify or rule out nerve compression or damage.

NCS is particularly useful for assessing conditions such as:

-
Carpal tunnel syndrome (median nerve entrapment at the wrist)
-
Cubital tunnel syndrome (ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow)
-
Generalised peripheral neuropathy (nerve dysfunction affecting hands and/or feet)

How it works for patients

-
Before the test: No special preparation is usually required. You can eat, drink, and take your medications as normal. Please let us know if you have a pacemaker or implanted device.
-
During the test: Small electrode pads are placed on the skin. You will feel a mild pulse that may cause slight muscle twitching. Most patients find this well tolerated.
-
After the test: You can resume normal activities straight away. There are no lasting side effects.
Your results are analysed by the Clinical Physiologist and Consultant Neurophysiologist. The report is sent to your referring clinician, who will explain the findings and next steps with you.

How it works for clinics and partners

We provide a fully mobile and self-contained service, designed to integrate easily into your existing care pathways.

-
Referral & scheduling
-
Referrals can be made directly by GPs, orthopaedic/hand specialists, neurologists, or allied professionals.
-
We agree on a suitable clinic date and bring all the necessary equipment.
-
-
On-site testing
-
A Clinical Physiologist attends your site to carry out the studies.
-
Each test typically takes 20–40 minutes, depending on indication.
-
-
Reporting
-
Results are provided within 24–48 hours.
-
Reports are clear, structured and suitable for onward referral or treatment planning.
-
-
Flexible service model
-
Single or multiple patients can be booked per session.
-
Clinics, private practices, hospitals, and occupational health providers can all access this service.
-

Common indications

-
Tingling, numbness or pain in the hands (suggestive of carpal tunnel syndrome)
-
Tingling, weakness or discomfort around the elbow and hand (suggestive of cubital tunnel syndrome)
-
Burning, tingling or numbness in the feet or hands (suggestive of peripheral neuropathy)
-
Pre-surgical evaluation for suspected entrapment neuropathies
-
Occupational screening for nerve compression syndromes
