Ambulatory EEG
Ambulatory EEG - Long-term brain activity monitoring

Ambulatory EEG is a portable, long-term recording of brain activity, typically lasting 24–72 hours.
Unlike routine EEG performed in a hospital, ambulatory EEG allows the brain’s electrical activity to be recorded during normal daily activities and sleep, providing a more complete clinical picture.
This test can be performed at home or in a clinic, making it more comfortable and less disruptive for patients, while providing clinicians with valuable diagnostic information.

Clinical Applications

Ambulatory EEG is frequently requested to support the diagnosis and management of:
-
epilepsy and paroxysmal events
-
Unexplained blackout episodes or collapse
-
Nocturnal events or suspected seizures during sleep
-
Differential diagnosis between epileptic and non-epileptic events
-
Quantifying seizure burden in known epilepsy

For Patients - What to Expect

-
A small portable EEG recorder is fitted at hospital or partner clinic.
-
Electrodes are gently applied to the scalp using medical adhesive or collodion.
-
The device records continuously for 24-72 hours while you go about your normal activities.
-
You may be asked to keep a symptom diary or press an event marker button during any episodes.
-
At the end of the study, the equipment is collected, and the data is analysed and reported by a senior clinical physiologist.
-
There is no pain involved, and you can sleep, move around, and maintain your usual routine (with some restrictions around bathing/showering during the recording).
